Most of the treatment for acne works by reducing quantity of oil that is produced, inflammation of the skin, speeding up turnover of skin cells or fighting infection by bacteria. For most drugs that are used, one should not expect to see positive outcome for the first about eight weeks. The condition may actually worsen before getting better. In considering acne treatment Worcester residents have various forms of treatment. Full treatment could be realized after as much as several years.

The drug that is recommended by the doctor is dependent on type and severity of the condition. There are topical medications that are applied to the skin or oral medications. In most instances, the drugs are taken in combination with others. Ladies that are pregnant should not use oral prescription medications for this condition. Topical medications are best effective when applied to dry, clean skin some 15 minutes after washing. The benefit of the treatment may not be seen for some time.

Some side effects will be experienced, notably skin irritation, redness, peeling and dryness. The doctor will recommend certain steps to reduce the side effects. These include switching to other medications, increasing medications gradually or washing off the medication after some time. An example of topical medication is antibiotics. These function by killing any excess bacteria in the skin and minimizing any redness.

The use of oral antibiotics is also a possibility in the case of moderate or severe acne. They will reduce bacteria and help in fighting inflammation. The doctors will recommend tapering off of medications after symptoms have started to improve or when the drugs have failed to help. Tapering helps to prevent resistance of bacteria through reduction of unwanted exposure to various medications after some time.

One will normally use oral antibiotics and topical medications together. There is the possibility of side effects from the use of oral antibiotics. The most common are dizziness and stomach upsets. The drugs will also tend to increase the sensitivity of the skin to the sun. Furthermore, there is the possibility of discoloration of the teeth and reduction in bone growth in kids. There are instances when therapies are considered, either in combination with other medications or alone.

There is the use of light based therapy that has a lot of success in treating acne. It works by targeting bacteria which cause inflammation. Some forms of therapy are done from home and others at the office of the doctor. One form of such therapy, blue light therapy, is done from home using a hand held device. Pain, temporary redness and light sensitivity are some side effects.

Chemical peel is the procedure whereby there is repeated application of such chemical solutions as salicylic acid. This form of treatment is most effective when combined with various other types of treatment. People taking oral retinoids should not consider chemical peel.

Dermatologists could use some special tools for removal of blackheads and whiteheads gently. These are those that may not have been cleared by topical medications. One may experience scarring but such scars can be handled in various ways.
