This dramatic event marks the point at which the learning and practicing the martial art no longer just self-defense, but also as a kind of physical exercise.

Already in the 14th century, Okinawa was the center of an independent island Kingdom of Ryukyu with trading contacts with Japan, China, Korea and Southeast Asia.
